Here is the information letter that the grade 4 students received today regarding their habitat project.
The actual habitat will be created in class. Each student is responsible to bring in their material for November 27th. I encouraged them to use what you already have at home as well as recycled products. The remainder of their research, for their habitat, will be done in class through Hapara. The only part of the project that they are responsible for at home it to find/research the answers to the two questions on the information letter that went home.
The information that answers the two questions needs to be brought to class on November 25th. This will be used to write out the answer in the format that I will give them.
PARENTS, your only task is to help them find the information needed to answer the 2 questions. That is it.

Recap of October and November News
November is already here and October flew by! Where has the time gone? The students are busy getting used to their routines and the demands of the French Immersion program. I am certainly starting to see some of them raise to the challenge as they are trying more and more to speak in French with me : )
Over the month of October, both groups were busy learning about the requirements of writing a good procedural text, a recipe. We worked in groups to create one, we went over the criterias to write one and they have now created their own fun Halloween recipe. Starting now, students will be asked to speak in French with me. Listening to French television, the radio, watching movies in French (start at 5-10 min and increase the time each time), ordering food in French at the restaurants - all those ideas are great to increase your child's exposure to French. This will help them develop their ear and build vocabulary.
Grade 4
In reading, the homework duotang has gone home over the past two weeks. Your child is responsible to read the paragraph assigned 10 times over the week. The reading log at the back is to be checked off every time they read aloud to you or another person. On this blog, on the right, you will find the readings read by moi! If your child forgot their duotang, the paragraph is still available to them online ; ) On Monday night, their first task is to look up the words they do not understand and add them to their dictionary at the back. Every day of the week, we will read the paragraph and I will explain in more detail what some of the sentences mean. Completing this homework diligently, on a daily basis, will improve your child's French reading comprehension tremendously. Please make sure you take 15-20 minutes every night to encourage this reading homework.
We have focused a lot on Science in October and we will conclude our first unit of study in November. Grade 4 students have been learning about animal habitats, their needs, physical and behavioural adaptations. Our next part is to talk about the impact human activities have on the natural habitats. You are invited to discuss these important issues with your child as you drive by many natural habitats that were impacted by construction in the surrounding areas.
Due to a schedule change, Mme Novak will now be responsible to teach Social Studies to the 4P class. We will be working closely together to ensure all the grade 4 students have the same fun and interesting tasks! I will continue to teach Social Studies to the grade 4/5 class. In both grade 4 classes, we will be learning about the physical regions of Canada.
Grade 5
In reading, students have gone home with a J'aime Lire book. They are asked to read the first part of the book at home and at school every day. On Friday, I will give them a question to answer based on their reading. This will give me an opportunity to verify their level of French and adjust their book accordingly. In French, grade 5 students need many reminders to speak to me in French and not in English. They are very capable of doing this, they just need a gentle push.
Once our science unit is completed, we will be moving onto Social Studies. Students will learn about Canadian symbols, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom and the responsibilities for each level of government. If the opportunity presents itself, it would be a good idea to open up discussions with your children about our rights and freedom, the Canadian symbols around us and the many services offered by the three levels of government (ie. LRT, passports, money, health care, education, etc).
In grade 5 science, students have been learning about the changes of matter: the characteristics of matter (how to describe it) and the states of matter. We will continue with learning about physical and chemical changes that occur around us every day. You could help your child by discussing how these changes in matter (ie. petroleum being transformed into plastic, making pre-packaged food) have a great impact on our environment. We will conclude our unit in November with the creation of a small cooler. Stay tuned!
On Monday, November 11th, at 10:45, we will be having our Remembrance Day Ceremony. The students will be participating as readers and singers for the last song. Please encourage them to listen to the song as much as possible so that they learn it by heart. You are all welcome to attend.
Looking forward to seeing you on November 14th for parent-teacher interviews. Please don't forget that Friday November 15th is a P.D. Day.

Recipe Presentation - Next Week
Today, your child went home with the date he/she will be presenting their recipe in front of the class. Before choosing their date, I asked your child to think about their other commitments and pick a date that best works for them. Let me know if the date they chose is not possible.
Most students went home today with the rough draft of their recipe that was edited and then corrected by me. Their next task is to complete their good copy at home. Once the good copy is done, they can keep it at home and use it to prepare for their presentation. The rough draft and the checklist must be returned to school. I will keep it and use it for their evaluation of their procedural text.
I am looking forward to listening to them express themselves in French during Halloween week. It will be spooktacular!

Halloween Presentation
The students have been learning about procedural writing in French class. We have gone over the format of a recipe, brainstormed vocabulary that could be used in our Halloween recipe and verbs that would be useful to write out the steps.In class, each student will create a fun, unique and creative Halloween recipe using the writing process: brainstorm, plan, rough draft, editing, and final copy. Once the edition is completed, students will go home and start planning their presentation: gather all ingredients (FAKE ingredients, materials, and some kind of disguise/costume). Then they practice their presentation while using the criterias outlined in the link below. In class, I will have a table and a cauldron set-up for them to use.
This presentation will be done during the last week of October. Each student will be asked to choose a date that works for them. Please discuss this with them by Monday, October 21st as I will prepare the schedule with them on that day.

September Welcome Letter 2019
Bonjour à tous!
Welcome students, parents, and guardians to grades 4 and 5! I am pleased to be your child’s French teacher this year as we begin a new journey together. September is always so exciting: new year, new class and new beginnings. Let 2019-2020 begin!
Our new Board Spiritual Theme, this year, is “Seek Justice, Love Kindness & Mercy, Walk Humbly with God”. For the first year, we will focus on social justice and introduce Catholic social teaching as a lens for learning throughout the curriculum. Our theme will continue to enable staff, students and community to dig deep in the Gospel to make real and meaningful connections with our everyday lives.
In our class, September will be about making real and meaningful connections as we get to know each other, establishing our routines and fully understanding what respect and responsibility mean. Your child will once again be immersed in the French language and the French culture while continuing to work on skills acquired last year: organization, social skills, self-confidence, and my personal favourite: problem-solving. When a problem arises, my ultimate response is: “There is always a solution, we just have to find it!” (Il y a toujours une solution, il s’agit de la trouver!). I strongly believe that children are creative problem solvers, they just need to be given the time to solve the problem and the opportunity to try out their solution. By the end of the year, my students, your children, will be better problem solvers!
Every year, I like to remind parents about the importance of showing an interest in your child’s French learning. Support and motivation are the keys to your child’s success in the French program. This can be accomplished by implementing some of these activities to motivate and stimulate your child so that him/her continues to enjoy learning a second language:
-Ask questions about what is being taught in class and suggest that the child teach you some vocabulary or sentence structures learned.
-Have your child read French books.
-Play French board games with your child.
- Allow them to make a phone call in French to a friend or family member.
- Download French Apps on tech devices
-Listen to your child read you the work they have written. If you do not understand French, simply listen then ask the child to explain what was read.
-Encourage your child to interact in French with French neighbours or acquaintances.
-Encourage your child to spend small amounts of time listening to French television (cartoons, sports, games, music & videos).
-Listen to French radio station in the car (94.9 Rouge FM or FM 104,1).
-Borrow French books from the library.
-Provide your child with a French/English dictionary and a Bescherelle.
-Volunteer in your child’s classroom.
-Go on field trips with your child.
- Visit places and participate in the French guided tours.
-Go to a restaurant in Gatineau.
-Register your child in French activities in your community.
-Register your child in French camps.

Communication between home and school is very important. With the use of technology, this can be done in a faster and easier manner. You will also find helpful websites, weekly readings, outlines for school assignments or research that needs to be done at home.
I will be using the Remind App to send you quick updates or reminders. This is not meant to replace the agenda. It is a communication tool that allows me to have a direct and quick link with you. You simply have to add the app on your phone and voilà!

This means that your child will be bringing back home all the waste from his/her lunch. This way, the items can be composted or recycled at home. Your help and cooperation are certainly appreciated in helping out our planet.

For safety and efficiency reasons, we want to reduce the amount of cash & cheques coming into our school. School related expenses are now available online for you to make payments. Please take a few minutes to register. It’s very easy. Simply go to the school website: the.ocsb.ca and click on the link on the right.
Drop-Off and Pick-Up
Student safety, your child’s safety, is very important to all of us. If you drop-off or pick-up your child before and after school, you are asked to please use the safest drop-off/pick-up options. Those are Kiss-and-Ride at the front of the school, or on Scala along the fence. I have also seen parents drop off their child in the parking lot off Scala Park and the student then walks to the school yard. The parking lot is unsafe and becomes very dangerous in the morning and after school. Your cooperation in this matter will ensure that our students are safe at all times.
